Universities should require every student to take a variety if courses outside the student’s field of study.
A well rounded education is  the stepping stone to success.  In order to expose students to various aspects of education and to widen their outlook, it has been suggested that  universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the main  field of study.  Though I agree with  encouraging students to take up a variety of courses, I do not think that it should be a stringent requirement.  Students should instead be able to make a thoughtful decision based on their talents and interests, while giving them a wide range of choices in the curriculum.
Every individual learns differently. Also, every individual has different strengths and weaknesses.  A system where it is required to take up a variety of courses in universities may be detrimental in case of some students. The wide range of subjects that one needs to be acquainted with may feel like a burden for slow learners, who then have to put in extra effort to wade through the required curriculum. Some students may feel overly  distracted and may lose and focus in their field of study,  at times not receiving an in depth understanding of the subjects.    Another group may even not attempt  to opt for the higher studies, deterred by the number of courses they need to complete.  Also, there are students who are passionate about their field of study, sometimes to the point that anything outside the field would be a tedium. With the rapidly advancing progress in various fields of studies, especially science and technology, students may benefit from focusing on their main subjects, focusing on a specific research area; they would be losing their precious time and money if they are forced to take up other courses.
Variety is the spice of life. Encouraging students to widen their educational fields and providing them with different choices may help them  to broaden their outlook and develop a well rounded personality. However it might not be practical to force such a curriculum on every student without taking into consideration their strengths and  limitations.
